Hello everyone. We are from Eishin High School in Fukuyama City,
Hiroshima Prefecture.
I am Shiori Harada, a second year student, and Mao Oshita, also a second year student.
The theme of our school is "Peace, People and the Environment."
みなさんこんにちは。広島県福山市にある、盈進高校からきました。
高校 2 年の原田栞里と同じく高校 2 年の大下真緒です。
私たちの学校は「平和・ひと・環境を大切にする」をテーマとしています。

One of our activities is the advocacy of Nuclear Abolition. We have been conducting a signature campaign among junior high and high school students in Hiroshima together with our fellow students. Today, we would like to share with you the reality of the atomic bombing and the heartbreaking cries of the atomic bomb survivors.

その活動の 1 つとして「核廃絶!ヒロシマ・中高生による署名キャンペーン」を仲間とともにこれまで継続して行っています。本日は、この活動を通じて、出合った被爆者の方々の被爆の実相を、そして彼らの悲痛な叫びを私たちの言葉で訴えます。

This signature campaign was inspired by a survey conducted by our seniors at the
Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park in 2008, in which 100 elementary school students were asked if they knew the date of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

ヒロシマ、ナガサキに原爆が投下された日を知っているかどうかを問うたアンケートがき
っかけとなった。

Forty-four percent could answer "6 August 1945," the date of the bombing
of Hiroshima,
and only 24% could answer "9 August 1945," the date of the bombing of Nagasaki. The results confirm that even within Japan, the lessons of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are fading.
ヒロシマ、ナガサキに原爆が投下された日を知っているかどうかを問うたアンケートがき
っかけとなった。

いることを裏付ける結果だった。

Based on these results, the group wondered what kind of sustainable peace activities junior high and high school students could engage in, and came up with the idea of a petition. The origin of this advocacy work is the suffering of the atomic bomb survivors.
This year marks the 17th year of the campaign.

いた。この活動の被爆者の苦しみが原点であり、今年で 17 年目を迎える。

But a medic told her, "If you drink that water, you will die!"
However, the girl begged her: "I don't care if I die, just let me drink the water!

切明さんは、そのような下級生に「水をください」と言われて、スプーンで水をあげようと
した。だが、衛生兵がこう言った。「水を飲んだら死ぬぞ!」"下級生は、切明さんに懇願し
た。「死んでもいい。水を飲ませて!」

The underclassman died. And she cremated the dead body with her own hands.
Ms. Kiriake says, "If she was going to die, I should have given her a drink of water.

Seventy-nine years have passed since the atomic bombings. But the mental and physical scars inflicted on the hibakusha will never disappear. And we must never forget those who died in the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atrocity.
切明さんは語る。「同じ、死ぬのなら、水を飲ませてあげればよかった。後悔している」と。そして、「わたしが生き残ってしまったことを、申し訳ないと思う」

The average age of the hibakusha is over 85. We will be the last generation to hear the true voices of the hibakusha. Time is running out for the hibakusha and for us.

Now is the time to listen, remember and pass on the cries of the souls of the hibakusha.
今こそ、被爆者の魂の叫びに耳を傾け、記録し、記憶し、継承しなければならない。

The hibakusha all say: "No one should ever have to suffer as we have."
This is the hibakusha's simple and noble wish for peace that transcends any sense of
revenge or hostility.
被爆者たちはみな、こう言う。
「もう誰にも自分と同じ思いをさせてはならない」
これは被爆者の復讐や敵対を超えた素朴で崇高な平和を希求する思想。

Now that she is 94 years old, Ms. Kiriake tells us Peace will not come if we just sit and wait. Let's not give up – let's work together to fight for peace.
切明さんは 94 歳になった今、私たちにこう語る。
「平和はじっと待っていても、来てはくれません。あなたたちも諦めないで一緒になって
平和を守りましょうよ。

We will take peace into our own hands. Hand in hand we will certainly increase the number of our friends. We firmly believe that we can join hands with everyone here.
私たちは私たちの手で、平和をつかみ取る。手と手をとり、確実に仲間を増やす。
ここにいる人全員と手を取り合うことができると強く信じている。
